· Dr. Ted BaehrChristian film critic
· Christian Film & Television Commission issued a statement on November 3rd
· “[Doctor Strange is] a dangerous introduction to demonic occult deception. ... The Bible clearly warns against the kind of occult practices and sorcery the hero in this movie learns to do, in Deuteronomy 18:9-12 and Galatians 5:20. Also in the movie, the hero's New Age, occult guru teaches there may be no afterlife, that death is truly the end, and that this is a good thing.”
· Bible verses supporting their conclusion include
Deuteronomy 18:10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,”
· Galatians 5:19 to 5:20 “19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; 20 idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, 21 and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.…
· Reminds me of the outrage about Harry Potter because Christians can’t envision a world where their god doesn’t get to dictate what everyone else believes, does, or watches
· Christian film watchdogs: Movieguide gave it a -4 rating.
Acceptability Ratings: +4 to -4
+4 EXEMPLARY: Biblical, usually Christian, worldview, with no questionable elements whatsoever.
+3 MORAL: Some minor questionable elements.
+2 GOOD: Moderately questionable elements.
+1 WORTHWHILE: Discernment required for young children.
-1 CAUTION: Discretion advised for older children.
-2 EXTREME CAUTION: Discretion advised for adults.
-3 EXCESSIVE: Excessive sex, violence, immorality, and/or worldview problems.
-4 ABHORRENT: Intentional blasphemy, evil, gross immorality, and/or worldview problems.
Acceptability Ratings take into account cognitive stages of development, moral issues and theological issues. Acceptability Ratings help parents with children and the media-wise adult viewer. Acceptability Ratings are based on a traditional view of the Bible and Christianity. Some movies receive positive ratings because they fit a biblical worldview of ethical monotheism, even though there is little specific Christian content in them. The ultimate evaluation of a movie depends on one’s moral and spiritual values. Those values depend on one’s worldview or total philosophy of life, humanity, the universe, and the supernatural.
· depicts a hero who learns humility through sacrifice so one would think that these values would hold up with Christian viewers.
· But alas, it doesn’t condemn magic so it doesn’t stand up to their bullshit morality scale
· On the other hand, who gives a fuck what a bunch of self righteous assholes think a movie like Doctor Strange fits into their morality scale. I know I don’t.
No new Patrons
No new Itunes reviews
Will commented on some of our patreon posts
First he said that he started listening to the Secular Barbershop after our interview with Uber
Then he said he likes Lisa as a new crew member and is glad she’s going to be a regular
Hopefully more people will start commenting on the Patreon posts, which I have started uploading directly to Patreon as audio files which means I have to drop the bitrate quite a lot. If the sound quality ever gets too bad on those full length ad free episodes I may start splitting them in two and uploading them separately. You’ll still get the whole thing, including music, just in two files.
We got an email from Stephanie,
Subject: Love your show!
Message: Hi everyone,
Just wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I appreciate this show. I work in an office setting and knowing a new episode of The Brainstorm will be in my iTunes makes Monday/Tuesday mornings suck so much less. Although my company is public and does not endorse any religion or political viewpoints, being an atheist in my office is exhausting. Half of my coworkers have large whiteboards with Bible verses jutting out into the aisle from their cubicles and large crosses on top of cabinets line my view every time I stand up. Prayer meetings are organized when someone is having a hard time, they stopped inviting me after I didn't show up to any of them. I know I could contact HR but I think it would be more trouble than it would be worth and if others were told not to read their bible out loud during lunch hour - the office atheist would be to blame. My reprieve comes from putting headphones on and listening to podcasts such as yours and microwaving my baby leftovers (the Asian ones taste the best - like built in teriyaki sauce)
Since listening to your show I have changed my mind on many things I was previously sure about - GMOs being the biggest example. Thank you for tackling issues of misinformation like this and citing the sources. The more outlets for people to access actual science the better. I'll stop rambling now, but just know your work is appreciated!
P.S. Gumby - you're an asshole. I love it. Never stop being you!
