In this episode of Skeptic Voices I talked to Michael Smith from the Poorly Summarized podcast. He was on The Skeptic Studio in the past and I thought it would a lot of fun to talk to him again. He's a good guy and we had a great chat about a lot of things.
In the first episode of Skeptic Voices in a long time I talked to Stephanie Zvan a couple days after her birthday. We talked about Secular Women Work, organizing conferences, and politics.
In this episode of The Hardcore Skeptic Examines, Cory talked to Dan Arel author of The Secular Activist and Parenting Without God. They talked about various aspects of social justice activism including protests and property damage.
Only 2 years late, this interview with Callie Wright for the Hardcore Skeptic series on social justice is still as relevant and worth publishing as it ever was. Society hasn't suddenly fixed itself since we talked and if anything it's gotten more important that we talk about this stuff and acknowledge how much farther we still have to go.
Some episodes don't have long form notes. Only episodes with the panel that were broadcast first as live full length episodes have long form note for them. One on One interviews, conference talks, and Positively Skeptical episodes can all be found under on their own pages.
I’m anti bullying, I’m pro safe spaces, I actually believe that the world should be one big safe space. Maybe if it was then all those people who think everyone needs to be tough wouldn’t feel the need to cover their own fragility with toughness.
I just want to add a short summary to this so that if the structure of my explanations is bad people can still understand the basic premises of what I’m getting at.
1. Socialism is the idea that workers should be in control of the means of production and should benefit from their labor.
2.Anarchism is the idea that we can have a society built on cooperation without hierarchies or coercion
3.There are a number of suffixes that can follow the prefix anarcho (which just speaks to the anarchism aspect) some of these suffixes can include syndicalist, communist, feminist, naturist, or any number of other philosophies that can be attached to anarchism. In this blog I have only addressed socialism and capitalism.
4.Libertarianism is historically a left wing philosophy that centers on liberty and freedom, as well as the abolition of capitalism and private property. North American right wing style libertarianism is a subversion of that in which wealthy capitalists lobby existing governments to reduce limitations on corporate power.
5.Anarcho-capitalists and right wing libertarians are not anarchists or libertarians.
We all have them, those friends we keep because we grew up in the same place. We might nod and say hi if we see them in public but we don’t really hang out with them. We keep them as friends on Facebook so that we can see what’s going on and what the general mentality of our hometown is or out of some strange sense of loyalty. It almost feels like a betrayal to unfriend them or block them. I mean, they were cool at one point and surely they must be cool now too. Well, not all of them are and this is a message for those friends from our hometown who for one reason or another have held onto those sexist ideas, or really any of the outdated and bigoted ideas that they hold onto.
Some news on the future of the show and what’s going on in December
I’m not trying to say that they (the media) are perfect. They make mistakes, they frame things badly, they’re very American centric and they are deeply rooted in the neoliberalism and capitalism that funds them, but they aren’t making shit up or engaging in coverups the way that some members of society seem to think.
While globalism has a long history stretching back to when ships could travel long distances and different economies and different political ideas could travel with them the conspiracy theories that we’re seeing a lot of today seem to have started in the late 1980s or early 1990s when the term New World Order came about. The New World Order or NWO is considered by those who believe in it to be a secret group of elitists who conspire to rule the world with an authoritarian world government which will replace all the sovereign nation states.
