Breaking down the logical fallacies #17
Fallacy of Division - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacy_of_division

A fallacy of division occurs when one reasons logically that something true for the whole must also be true of all or some of its parts

Inferring that something is true of one or more of the parts from the fact that it is true of the whole.  This is the opposite of the fallacy of composition.

Logical Form:

o   A is part of B

o   B has property X

o   Therefore, A has property X.

Example

o   His house is about half the size of most houses in the neighborhood, therefore, his doors must all be about 3 1/2 feet high

o   I heard that the Catholic Church was involved in a sex scandal cover-up.  Therefore, my 102 year-old Catholic neighbor, who frequently attends Church, is guilty as well!

Variation: The ecological fallacy or ecological inference fallacy focuses on statistical data.  For example, if the Giants are doing poorly this year, it would be fallacious to conclude that every member on the team is doing poorly.

The Transcendental Argumenthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcendental_argument_for_the_existence_of_God

The Transcendental Argument for the Existence of God (TAG) is the argument that attempts to prove God's existence by arguing that logic, morals, and science ultimately presuppose a supreme being, and that God must be the source of logic and morals

The argument

o   God (most often God is defined as the supreme entity found in Christianity), is a necessary precondition for knowledge (logical reasoning, morality)

o   People know things (have logical, and moral intuitions)

o   Therefore, God exists

Can you see the problem with this? Of course you can, this doesn’t prove shit. It just asserts that god exists because god exists.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Transcendental_argument_for_God

The logic objection

o   If logic is created by or contingent on god then god can change the principles of logic at it’s whim.

o   That means that god can change the laws of identity so that they’re invalid

o   Which means statements would no longer be themselves. Which is false

o   If logic is contingent on god then to argue that god cannot change them takes away omnipotence

o   Therefore the claim that logic is dependant on god is false

The science objection

o   Science presupposes that natural law has always operated as it operates at present and that there have been no violations of such laws

o   Christianity presupposes a type of god that performs miracles

o   Miracles are by definition a violation of the natural laws

o   Therefore, science presupposes the non existence of any miracle giving gods

o   If the argument is stated that the natural laws have not always been as they are then the scientific method and as a result, science need to be thrown out

o   This removes all meaning from the statement that science presupposes god

o   Throwing science out makes no sense because it works and the natural laws are what they are

o   Therefore no miracle giving god who violates the laws of nature, exists

I think my favorite argument against morality coming from god is the modified Euthyphro dilemma

o   Is what is morally good commanded by God because it is morally good, or is it morally good because it is commanded by God?"

o   Basically the idea is that if something is good and that’s why god commands it, then good is independent of god

o   And if something is good because it is demanded by god then it isn’t objective because god can change its mind and reverse the command

o   In this vein, humanity is left with no direction as to what is truly morally good

o   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthyphro_dilemma

Morality continued

o   From http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Transcendental_argument_for_God

o   if morality presupposes god and moral obligations are dependent on the will of god then there are a couple problems

o   Which god? This is pretty standard but there’s no way to tell which set of god beliefs one should get their morals from.

o   If god created morality can he change it and if he can; does that not remove it from the category of objective?

o   An objective moral standard would have to be independent of god and would as such apply to god’s actions

o   It would have to be uniformly applicable to all actions and actors

o   This implies that it cannot come from god

o   If we accept that god created morality then we must accept that he can change it for if he can’t then it calls into question the omnipotence of said god
