A Series Of Unfortunate Events

September 16th, 2016 Episode 54

Hi and welcome to the Brainstorm podcast. This is episode 54 and today is September 16th, 2016. I’m Cory and my panel tonight are Destin and Rene, with the always amazing Dave doing sound. We’re here in Roman Empire studios in Regina, Saskatchewan. Tonight’s show is brought to you by Reasonist Ink, atheist, skeptic, and science based apparel. You can find them at ReasonistInk.com. Tonight’s guest didn’t make it onto the show due to some unforeseen circumstances. So we had to wing it. Short two crew members, sleep deprived, and without a guest; but we still did a show. I leave it to you to decide how good it was.

The Woo Report

So, there’s this video that came across one of the groups I’m in. It’s from a page that’s titled yoga 108 Bali. It starts off with the line, “Scientific research shows that your heart has an aura and intelligence”. What’s your first question?; What’s an aura? How is it defined? What would it mean for the heart to have intelligence? How about; can you show me the research?

It doesn’t actually tell you anything about he research but it has a little watermark in the bottom right hand corner that claims the video source belongs to the Heartmath Institute.

The rest of the video is pretty stupid. You can go to Brainstormblog.net and check it out if you want. Apparently Collective Evolution also has their mark in the video so that should also help you if you want to know about the credibility of this thing.

So the Heartmath Institute.

The mission of the HeartMath Institute is to help people bring their physical, mental and emotional systems into balanced alignment with their heart’s intuitive guidance. This unfolds the path for becoming heart-empowered individuals who choose the way of love, which they demonstrate through compassionate care for the well-being of themselves, others and Planet Earth.

https://www.heartmath.org/assets/uploads/2015/03/heart-brain-neurodynamics.pdf

So just checking out their “research” section is a fucking joke. The above pdf is supposedly one of their research papers but it is nothing of the sort. It is a 35 page pamphlet detailing their thoughts about the way the heart and brain connect. There’s no research, no data, no mechanism of action, no connection shown in any way.

Not that I was expecting any real information.

Cory’s Story
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2016/09/09/youth-pastor-rapes-teen-girl-and-church-demands-she-apologize-to-her-rapists-wife/

Well, this story is just fucking depressing. From Addicting Info, Youth Pastor Rapes Teen Girl and Church Demands that she apologize to her rapists wife.

The Columbia road Baptist church in north olmstead, ohio banned a girl and her family from attending until she apologizes to the wife of the guy who raped her.

Brian Mitchell was a youth pastor who took advantage of a girl who came to him for spiritual guidance. He started by texting her constantly and complaining about his wife. Once that was found out by church officials, he stopped for a time. He was never reported to the police. He kissed her after driving the girl home in August 2015. The next time he drove her home he sexually abused her.

It went on for about a month before the girl became depressed.

Mitchell was arrested after that and was sentenced to serve ten years in prison.

One would think that his guilt in a court would be enough for his church to abandon him.

Unfortunately, this is not the case as the girl’s mother revealed during her testimony. The church is apparently on the side of Mitchell and won’t let the girl or her family return to service until an apology has been made.

Biblical apologetics

Biblical apologetics include issues concerned with the authorship and date of biblical books, biblical canon (A biblical canon or canon of scripture[1] is a list of texts (or "books") which a particular religious community regards as authoritative scripture.) and biblical inerrancy (the doctrine that the Bible "is without error or fault in all its teaching";[1] or, at least, that "Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact".[2])Christian apologists defend and comment on various books of the Bible. Some scholars who have engaged in the defense of biblical inerrancy include Robert Dick Wilson (an American linguist and Presbyterian scholar who devoted his life to prove the reliability of the Hebrew Bible), Gleason Archerbiblical scholar, theologian, educator and author.), Norman Geisler (a Christian systematic theologianphilosopher, and apologist. He is the co-founder of two non-denominational Evangelical seminaries (Veritas Evangelical Seminary[1] and Southern Evangelical Seminary[2])) and R. C. Sproul (an American Calvinist theologian, author, and pastor. He is the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries). There are several resources that Christians offer defending inerrancy in regard to specific verses.[citation needed] Authors defending the reliability of the Gospels include Craig Blomberg(American New Testament scholar. He is currently a Distinguished Professor of the New Testament at Denver Seminary in Colorado) in The Historical Reliability of the Gospels,[45] Mark D. Roberts(pastor, author, leader, speaker, blogger, and consultant for Christian organizations. Currently, Mark is the Executive Director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership atFuller Seminary in Pasadena, California.) in Can We Trust the Gospels?[46] Richard Bauckham ( English Anglican scholar in theologyhistorical theology and New Testament studies, specialising in New Testament Christology and the Gospel of John.), Craig Evansevangelical New Testament scholar and author. He is a prolific writer with 70 books and over 500 journal articles and reviews to his name) and Darrell Bock (American evangelical Christian New Testament scholar and research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary in DallasTexas,)

In all honesty, we did a crap job of discussing this subject during the podcast. If you have someone you think we should have on to talk about biblical canon and inerrancy, shoot us an email at mail@brainstormblog.net and we’ll try to get an expert on to discuss the subject.

Then we did a bit of chatting about being accused of intellectual dishonesty and what we think about it. It certainly seems that lots of people are accusing each other of it these days.

I enjoy this. It's fun and entertaining. I even learn some stuff. It reminds me of Atheist Airwaves.

Fun, interesting conversation. Five Stars

I hope this isn't premature...listened to two podcasts and enjoy it as much as any other conversational, topical secular podcast. It sounds honest. (Typical Canadians) [Kidding]. I might binge them like I just found out about Breaking Bad. I may have found a P.O.V. from our Canadian neighbors that feels like we're out one night riding in the same car talking about who knows what.

That's all Folks

So that’s where we’re going to end the episode.  Before we go I want to make sure to mention our website, Brainstormblog.net. We have comprehensive show notes, including any notes that I’ve made regarding my stories and any notes that the rest of the crew gives me for theirs.
