April 1st, 2016 Episode 43 Hi and welcome to the brainstorm podcast. This is episode 43 and today is April 1st, 2016. I’m Cory and my panel tonight are Destin, Angela, and Rene, with the always amazing Dave doing sound. We’re here in Roman Empire studios in Regina, Saskatchewan and tonight we’ve got no guest. We were going to have Matt Dillahunty on but due to a scheduling issue he was unable to join us tonight. We knew it was tenuous but we were hoping for the best. So, you just get us tonight and we may as well hop into the woo report.

The article starts off the same as many others, telling you the importance of dental hygiene. This isn’t controversial and oddly enough they actually provide a link to Colgate Professional. A bit weird sharing a toothpaste company link in an article from a chemophobe. Despite the first bit of legit info coming from a site for a toothpaste company the article goes on to talk about how toxic toothpaste is and shares a page from mercola.com in an effort to convince you of the terrible ingredients within.
Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent. triclosan has been shown to help prevent gingivitis. The mercola article makes some hefty claims about the dangers of triclosan but then ends it with the statement that “people who brushed their teeth with Colgate Total had more than five times as much triclosan in their urine as those who did not” Which stands to reason because that means the body is passing the triclosan through after it cleans the mouth and enters the system.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate anionic detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products. Basically it’s a foaming agent. Aspartame is the artificial sweetener in most toothpastes. And it doesn’t do any of the bad things that mercola thinks it does. One of the most amusing parts of this section of the mercola article is the end where they list symptoms of methanol poisoning. And of course Fluoride, which is the scapegoat of all the crazy natural health bullshit sites. There are more ingredients but I didn’t have the time to go through them all in detail. Needless to say, a simple google search or wiki search can tell you the facts about everything that the chemophobe crowd is afraid of.
Then of course, comes the ingredients for the all natural pure bullshit toothpaste
Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil 1 Teaspoon or 2 Capsules Turmeric 1 to 2 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil
The original article makes some claims about he benefits of the ingredients. First it claims that turmeric is an anti inflammatory. I could find no reputable source that confirmed this but alternative health nuts often over inflate the benefits of turmeric for which there is very little evidence.
There’s coconut oil which is supposedly an anti bacterial agent an supposedly has an anti inflammatory effect as well. I couldn’t find any good sources that confirmed this.
Supposedly these two random ingredients are also supposed to have a whitening effect on you teeth which will reduce or remove the need for whitening toothpastes or strips. Which I’ve been led to believe in the past, are mostly marketing hype anyway. I’ll add some of the links I looked at in the show notes.

Skepticism 101 part 11: Breaking down the logical fallacies part 5
Argument from silence (argumentum ex silentio) – where the conclusion is based on the absence of evidence, rather than the existence of evidence
To make an argument from silence (Latin: argumentum ex silentio) is to express a conclusion that is based on the absence of statements in historical documents, rather than on presence. Generally speaking, absence of evidence is not evidence; however, there are many cases where the reason evidence is being held back can be seen as evidence.
A good example of this is what many consider the mythicist position on Jesus. There is no evidence for his existence where we would expect it. It is considered a logical fallacy to therefore assume that the lack of evidence counts towards the positive assertion that jesus did not exist.
Agnostics and theists often claim that atheists are using this fallacy to arrive at the atheist conclusion, ignoring that we are not actually making a positive claim.
Last example is conspiracy theories who rely on the lack of evidence to count as evidence that something sinister is going on. The cover up proves the conspiracy.
Atheism for Dummies part 10
Religion for atheists part 4 – Hinduism
Hinduism is the major religion in India, and has around 900 million adherents. It is a monotheistic religion that looks like a polytheistic religion. The main god is Brahman but has many minor aspects. They believe that humans are in bondage to ignorance and illusion with the purpose to break the cycle of rebirth or to at least improve their station in the next life with the cycle continuing until one gains enlightenment. Hinduism is the religion that spawned the insufferable concepts of karma and yoga which have been twisted into even more bullshit by western culture. Their holy texts consist of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana. The Ramayana (/rɑːˈmɑːjənə/; Sanskrit: रामायणम्, Rāmāyaṇam, pronounced [rɑːˈmɑːjəɳəm]) is a Sanskrit epic poem ascribed to the Hindu sage and Sanskrit poet Valmiki. It is regarded as one of the two great works of Indian literature, along with the Mahabharata
